After reading a post on one of the many design sites I follow I decided to try and create my own. I was hoping to come up with something new and exciting like the ones I had seen but thought it best to keep it simple. After all the best design is often the simplest.

So I need some feedback. My website name needs to be changed as well as my YouTube to allow for design consistency but here is the preliminary design.

The cards are double sided.

Next I decided to try and add a bit of interactivity to the card. Why? Because I am nearly an ‘interaction designer’ so thought I would catch people’s attention better if they actually had to do something with the card. I toyed with a few ideas (such as giving away chewing gum) and other things but decided on a QR tag on the back. It reminded me of the Men In Black business card from the film.

Here is the card with the same information as text when read by a QR tag reader. (http://reader.kaywa.com)

The problem with this one is that the camera didn’t read it. Maybe because there is too much information to pick up or just the fact that it is being tested on screen so maybe the reader struggles. Either way I decided to simplify the information down.

Now the QR tag simply has my mobile number and a message that it asks the phone to send to me “Hi Craig, would you like an interview?”. I thought it was quite a nice touch.

The only downside is that there really is no information on the card. Perhaps I should change that.

[EDIT]

So after some consideration I decided that I need both. Here is the final concept, some work still need to do but I am happy with what is on the card.

Just need to tweak colours and spacing.

I love new things. I love shiny things. I get distracted and I always start a re-design and then never actually finish or implement is because I find some new inspiration and try to do that.

Recently I had to create a paper portfolio and went for a simple way to convey my projects with as little distraction as possible. Unfortunatleyit ended up looking a bit corporate but I would not have been happy with the final result anyway as I like things to be perfect. And lets not mention the “best” printer in college apparently has very poor colour reproduction of blues *sad face*.

Anyway my point is that my blog and online folio look nothing like it. I have no consistency with any of my online presence except that my Twitter picture is the same as the favicon on this site.

Design consistency is important in creating a whole entity. For each project I do I create a ‘brand’ if you like, that tries to show a little bit about that project but now I’m worried about showing them all at the same time for the final presentation where people sit and decide if I get a degree or not.

I would like to think that, while my designs may not be as good as a professional illustrator, they’re good enough to look nice and convey what they need to. I guess that’s the whole idea about good interaction design. Keep it simple and don’t distract.

I like that – I think I’ll bare that in mind.

Here are a few more images showing a few more refined areas of the proposed blog design. The main blog page now has extra items on the left at an angle which will need to be images and have a image map to create links. Then there is a more detailed side bar for the photography section. With the image mapping involved in this design it means it will be even less able to translate into a WordPress theme than the current design.

When CSS 3.0 is relseased and browsers accept the standards, I will be able to create the slanted text effect without using images and so will be able to turn it into a dynamic menu and therefore a theme. Unless I’ve changed the design again… which is more than likely!

This is a concept for a new blog design. I don’t know if I will have time to finish the concept and put it into action but after a few comments by Daniel O’Connell relating to a similar looking piece of work, I decided to prototype a few bits. I still need to show how images will look, YouTube videos, links, tags, tag cloud, blogroll, search box and comments. Also I want to tailor this to include my latest Flickr uploads (possibly in the photography section) and my twitter feed, something I didn’t do in my current theme as I didn’t know I was going to use them as much as I have.

I will keep working on it and post up a more polished picture in another post.

Here are the results, comments are welcome.

Here is the same but inverted. I prefer the impact of this one but unsure as to how the blog will look further down the page when the background is all orange.

Every year my Dad and his friends head of to Le Mans to watch the 24 hour race and every year they do something to make it fun. They all drive fancy super-cars and always get a lot of attention so they always like to take advantage of that.

Last year I made up some signs for them reading “Lamborghini parking only, all thers will be towed” replacing Lamborhini with the respective car’s logo. I made them using a vinyl cutter my Dad got me a few years ago.

This year he wants to do something again, so he came to me with an idea which I have turned into a reality.

After looking at the logo for a test-pilot society he wanted to create his own with drivers. So the ‘society for experimental and high-performace vehicle test drivers’ was born.
