Using Twitter For Customer Service @VirginMedia

Virgin MediaRecently I had a bad experience with Virgin Media when I moved out of my last house. There was some fine print that meant when I upgraded my broadband, they actually just started a new 12 month contract (even though I’d been with them for 2 years). They then sent me a bill for the remaining balance of £133 or there abouts and I was fuming (as when I spoke to the guy on the phone during the cancellation process, he mentioned nothing about this). I have been offered a work placement at ITV Future Technologies in Camden. Great! I’m not writing about that now but I’m sure I will post about what I can while I’m working there. It has got me thinking about my future though. What do I want to do? Who do I want to do it for? Will it make me any money?

I am talking about employability of course, and not just getting a job after my BA Honours but ‘being all that I can be’. I am concerned that my BA may not be enough let me reach the heights that I want to in my career. Fate could deal me some great cards in terms of working for the right people and being in the right place at the right time but if there is something I can do now to give me the edge over my competitors then I owe it to my future to do it. I have learnt from my father’s experience when he reached a point from which he could not ascend because of a piece of paper (or lack thereof) regardless of experience and being the best in his field. I don’t want this to happen to me, so any qualifications I can get now, I won’t have to struggle without later and may open doors for me sooner than would have otherwise opened. Read more…

I have just returned from a very nice two week holiday in the Bahamas with my parents and sister but if you think I am going to write about how the holiday was as my first post then you are sorely mistaken. That will come later.

The first post is about how thoroughly targeted I felt on the journey, how my privacy was invaded at every opportunity and how nobody seemed to want to listen to reason – nobody with any authority anyway.

To get to the Bahamas you have a few choices to make as there is not yet a direct flight to the island of Exuma where we stayed. Do you go to Nassau then on to Exuma or do you go through Miami then on to Exuma? The only difference is that going though Miami is much cheaper but I advise caution if you are a white, British family of four. Read more…

Bandwidth STILL Not Enough….!!

I’m sitting here trying to browse the web… but I’m finding it VERY difficult. Its just soo slow for no apparent reason. Rob and I experienced this the other day whilst trying to play Xbox Live.

uTorrent = Off (Was only downloading at 7kb/s anyway :S)
Outlook = Unable to send emails (which is all I want it to do…!)
Limewire = Off
TCP/IP = Optimized for my connection
Ports = Open
Connection = Excellent

Therefore I am convinced that someone in my flat is downloading stuff at uber speeds… and not taking into consideration other people browsing the web.

At least when I do it I limit the upload (main cause of slowing the bandwidth by uploading at the maximum the connection can handle) and the download to 500 kb/s (only 1/4 of my actual bandwidth, and considering there are only 4 of us using it I think that’s more than generous)

Further investigation needed… it seems that no matter how fast the speed, people will hog the bandwidth. The only way to solve this issue is to make the bandwidth soooo fast that the download time is only a few seconds max.

Crap…

Tis The Season…But Who Is Jolly?

I’ve just realised that as much as I want this term to be over and the Berlin project to be far far away, when we have finished this…I might actually start learning something.

Russell offered to give us some flash tutorials which I’m sure will have more real world applications than what Reinhard showed us last year. A few of us want to develop a Facebook application, not just because we have some ideas but because we are all interested in learning the process and technology behind something like Facebook. After all isn’t it people exactly like us that start these kind of web products that are now worth millions? Facebook? Youtube? Even google!

It strikes me as odd that the most I will have learnt this term is potentially after the term has finished. Doesn’t that seem odd to you? What exactly am I paying for? A piece of paper?

Do you know how good the Christmas presents I could have bought with this terms tuition fees could have been?

Tis the season to be jolly…annoyed!
